About Jammu
The snowcapped mountains, sprawling valleys, rivers, springs, plains and plateaus make Jammu and Kashmir location classic example of perfect tourist place. The state of Jammu and Kashmir is strategically located on the northernmost part of India. It is geographically located between 32.17 º and 36.58 ° northern latitude and 37.26 ° and 80.30 ° eastern longitude.
Jammu Division between an altitude of 300 meters & 4200 meters above Mean sea level (MSL). Ranbirsingh Pura in Jammu district and Sumcham (Paddar) in Doda district are the lowest and highest permanent settlement points for human population. Human population of the Division as per Census 2001 is 43.96 lacs.
The climate of the region varies with altitude. In and around Jammu city, the climate is similar to the nearby Punjab region with hot summers, rainy monsoon and mildly cold winters. While Jammu City itself does not experience any snowfall, the higher hills and mountains are snow-capped at least in the winter season. People from all over India come to the Patnitop mountain resort to enjoy the winter snows. The shrine of Vaishni Devi is covered with snow in the winter. The Banihal Pass which links the Jammu region to the Kashmir region often experiences closure in the winter months due to extremely heavy snowfall.
